About Samuel Susskind

Tarnow birth record lists birth of Salomon Wolf Weitzman on December 29, 1876 at house number 75 in Tarnow. Often, a child would adopt the maiden name of his mother. Samuel Susskind was born Solomon Wolf Weitzman. The reason for this was that when a Jewish child was born, often the parents were not married through civil law but only through Jewish law. Therefore, it was not uncommon for the civil law to refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the birth. This resulted in the child being required, by civil law, to take the name of the mother (Kurzweil Arthur. from Generation to Generation. How to Trace Your Jewish Genealogy and Personal History. 1980). On Samuel's birth record is written, " przyznaje się do ojcowskie is objęte swiatkowy rab 8, David Bodermerl" or, "He admits to paternity and is covered by the word of David Bodermerl." "llegitymowanie wskutek następnego zawarcia ślubu małżeństwo rodzicow pod dniem 3, Lipiec 1879, mej. ślub Tarnow 3. str. 12 paz 24" which means "sanction of marriage of parents was carried out on day 3, July 1879, see Tarnow Weddings page 12, paragraph 24" In the 1900 Census, Samuel and Millie lived with a boarder, Mollie Erzlich, at 61 Cannon Street, Manhattan. In the time between 1907 and 1908, they moved to Newark. In the 1910 census, they lived at 188 Boyd Street, Newark. Sam was a grocer. In the 1915 NJ Census, he is the Census Enumerator! He lists birth as December 1877, though his Polish birth record lists December 1876. His occupation is cutter. On his WWI Draft Registration dated 9/12/1918, he listed permanent address as 36 Jones Street, Newark. He listed employment as tailor with Sigmund Eisner Co. in Carteret, NJ. He listed next of kin as his wife, Millie. In the 1920 Census, they moved to 447 South 11th Street (where they still lived by 1940 census). Samuel was a tailor for men's pants. Isadore (born 1901) worked as a stock clerk at lamp works. Ida (born 1907) was a coiler at the lamp works. In the 1930 Census, Ida (age 23) was a dress saleslady. Abe (b. 1908) was a furniture salesman. In the 1940 census, Samuel and Millie lived with Dora Lechter (listed as sister - in - law). She was born in NY in 1905 and was working as a dress saleslady.
