Joseph Susskind served in the 89th company of the 51st Coast Artillery Regiment, which during WW I became the Railway Artillery Reserve. The 6th Prov Regiment departed New York, arriving France 9-11-17. Redesignated 51st Artillery, CAC, 2-5-18. Batteries I & K, rearmed with British Mk VII 8-inch howitzers in December 1917, were detached from 51st Artillery Regiment in the latter part of March 1918 and assigned to the Provisional Howitzer Regiment as the 5th & 6th Howitzer Batteries. The 51st Artillery was part of the 30th Brigade, CAC, Railway Artillery Reserve (RAR) until August 1918. Joseph Susskind was listed in a WWI Departure Transport list. His rank was private CAC with service # 375444. He was on the Ship, Euripides departing from Brooklyn on October 7, 1918. Residence at discharge listed 174 Osborne Terrace, Newark, NJ. In the 1920 Irvington, NJ Director, Joseph is listed at 165 Augusta Street. His first son, Arthur, is listed in NJ Death records as dying in March 1929 in Irvington, NJ. In the 1930 Census, Joseph, Edith and Bernard lived at 19 Stratford Place, Newark. The building was still standing as of 2016. Irwin and Pearl Rauchberg as well as Pearl's mother, Eva Rauchwager lived in the same building. Of note, Joseph lived with Irwin and his family (Samuel and Dora Rauchberg) previously (as listed in 1920 Census). Joseph's law office was at 972 Broad Street, room 507 (building still present as noted on Google Earth 2016). In the 1930's Joseph was elected to the first Board of Trustees of Henry George School of New Jersey at 78 Clinton Ave. Newark. In 1940, he was named head of a Photographic Group to do the work of preparing slides for illustrated lectures in New Jersey. In the 1950 US Federal Census, Joseph was listed as Sergeant at Arms, County District Court.
