About Thomas Sanford

Note: Carlton Sanford says that Thomas married (2) Elizabeth Gibbard, but neither Jacobus nor Abbot give a second marriage. Torrey lists his first marriage to "1/wf Elizabeth Payne", but identifies no second wife. Torrey does show an entry for the marriage of Thomas Sanford and "2/wf Sarah Gibbard" ca 1662/3, but it refers to Thomas Sanford (1617-1684) of Hartford and Milford. The Colonial Record reports that at Hartford 18 May 1668, Thomas Yale Junr & Thomas Sandford, from New Haven, were nominated for freeman. He appeared on the census of October 1669 in New Haven, New Haven County, CT: "N:[ew] Haven freemen [October 1669] ... Thomas Sanford." On 18 November 1679 William Paine of New Haven deeded to his son-in-law, Thomas Sanford of New Haven "as part portion of my daughter Elizabeth, the house and home lot he now lives on."

Thomas was allotted land in 1680. Having seven in his family and a taxable estate of L50-10s, he received forty acres. He drew lots on the east side of East River, in what was first called North Farms. The area later became the Parish of North Haven, and in 1786 the town of North Haven.

On 23 September 1681 he was mentioned as son Thomas in the will of Thomas Sanford of Milford. In 1721 Thomas deeded 40 acres to his son Samuel, two pieces of land to his grandson William, and all the rest of his estate, personal and real, to his son John. In return John agreed to "well, comfortably and honorably maintain me and my wife so long as we shall live and give a comely and decent burial to our bodies, and to pay at my death to my daughter Anna Abbott L4, to my daughter Sarah Beach L5 and to my granddaughter Elizabeth Huminston L8."

Thomas left no will and there is no record of his death.
