Vernon Woodrow Oakley

Graveside funeral services will be held at Lindsay Strathmore Public Cemetery on Friday, September 9, 2011, at 10 A.M. for Vernon Woodrow Oakley, 92, of Lindsay, who passed away after a long battle with cancer on September 1.

Vernon was born September 14, 1918, in Memphis, Texas, to Joe and Bertie Oakley. He was raised and schooled there.

He married Jessie McQueen in June of 1938. Then the Oakley family came to California and to Lindsay in 1940.

He worked for many years, as did most of the people of that time, in the Olive packing houses in Lindsay.

Vernon and his wife, Jessie, owned and operated the Lindsay Floral Shop for 40 years.

Vernon was preceded in death by a son, David Conroy Oakley.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Jessie W. Oakley of Lindsay; two children, Delores Lapadula and Ron Oakley, both of Lindsay. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Collins of Estelline TX, and Ruby Graham of Memphis Tx.
