BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE HAPLOGROUP

The ancestral haplogroup R1b is by far the most frequent haplogroup in

Eurasia, reaching frequencies close to 100%. For some time, it was under

discussion whether its origin was Palaeolithic or Neolithic, and it is now

accepted that it was originated in the Near East about 25,000 years ago,

and then migrated to the steppes. From the steppes, R1b was taken in

the migration of the Indo-European horse tamers (Yamna culture) in the

Bronze Age to the rest of the European continent, having replaced the

local indigenous male lineages, even in Iberia. This total replacement

was observed in the ancient DNA, which indicates that all other current

paternal lineages not of this haplogroup were probably introduced in

more recent migrations. There are several sub-lines of R1b according to

geography and yours is more frequent in Central Europe.

WILLIAM HENRY EDWARD BROOKS, 1875 - 1960

William's life history and ancestry remains a mystery. There were lots of stories and speculation in the family. Herewith is my notes and findings.

What I was told when I started my research c. 2006:-

William Henry Edward's life history from his birth until around 1904 is unknown and is the subject of much speculation, including when he came to live in Zeerust. It is said that he is a descendant of the 1820 settlers. Research indicates 1820 settlers of the surname BROOKS did settle in Namaqualand in the early 1800's.

According to his son, Albert Edward BROOKS, he grew up in the foster care of Phillip Henry Ebden THEUNISSEN, born 1846 from the age of a young boy on the farm 'De Rust', Zeerust. [Coordinates: De Rust, latitude of -25.57 (25° 34' 0 S), longitude of 26.02 (26° 1' 0 E), is a farm located in the area of Transvaal in South Africa that is a part of Africa. De Rust is situated 431 kilometers north east (28°) of the approximate center of South Africa and 222 kilometers west (274°) of the capital Pretoria.]

His sister lived with the SEPHTON's on another farm in the area. As a young man he worked for the family called WHITFIELD and P.H.E. THEUNISSEN.

Information available:-

It seems that he was living in Bechuanaland or that Zeerust fell in Bechuanaland while he was married to his first wife Alida Maria COETZEE. She died in APR 1904 in Zeerust. On the death notice he wrote "Occupier". Their four children were born between 1897 and 1904.

When he married Margaretha Wilhelmina PRIDDLE in DEC 1904 he indicated that he was from Bechuanaland.

He bought the farm 'Vergenoegd' in Zeerust around 1914 from Georg VILJOEN and settled there with his wife Margaretha Wilhelmina PRIDDLE.

He sold the farm to his son Albert Edward BROOKS due to financial difficulties caused by his daughter Emily's first husband, in 1954-1960. His son, Albert Edward was the only child still living on the farm at the time and took care of his parents untill their deaths.

He died from Carunoma Lung at age 85 at 6pm according to his death certificate.

He is buried in the family graveyard on the farm 'De Rust' next to Margaretha and his son John William Henry.

His ID no. was 343 745 978 W.

William and his wife, Margaretha, rode transport of goods including wood, which they cut themselves in their area and sold. Their son Albert Edward sometimes accompanied them on these trips.

INFORMATION FROM WILLIAM JERVOIS 15 MAY 2007

Most of the settlers spread outwards from this area [their original locations of 1820 Settlers], as the colony developed. Before 1850, most folk moved themselves into better (and safer) farming areas, such as Fort Beaufort, Bedford and Adelaide. Some certainly did move towards the western Cape and northwards into the Orange Free State. However, it was individual families that [m]oved, not parties, as most parties lost their cohesion within the first few months after the settlement!

Aunty Thelma says Wiilliam BROOKS came from England and landed in South West Africa or Angola.

Reply from me:

This is new info which I need to follow up on, but it fits in with my research and possible ancestors I have flagged to date.

For what it is worth my research so far has lead me to the following scenarios. On my recent trip to Namibia I learnt about Afrikaners that trekked to SWA and Humpata in Angola in what is known as the Thirstland trek. This took place from after the Great Trek throughout the later half of the 1800's. Hunters and traders made trips there to hunt elephants and trade with the locals as well. The treks started from Springbok and Zeerust areas and many died on the treks as the conditions were really bad. I have been researching this a little as this seems to be a logical and plausible answer as to why there is no trace of the Brooks untill WHE Brooks arrived in Zeerust. His parents could have died while on the trek and he and his sister were brought to Zeerust to fellow 1820 settler and Afrikaner families that had settled in Zeerust, ie Sephton and Gush, Whitfield etc. There was a James Joseph Brooks in Namaqualand who was part of a large family of which I have traced quite a number of descendants. I am related to this family through my grandmother Johanna. However, I cannot find any trace of him or any descendants, which may mean that he went on the Thirstland trek. This James Joseph was a descendant of the 1820 settlers. His age etc. fits in with our timeline. Also the practice was to name your firstborn son after your father and following that WHE named his first son James Joseph it is possible that this James Joseph that I cannot trace was WHE's father.

Another possibility I have found is that of a William Brooks and son, William that were in SWA in 1875. William Snr died at Phallah Fountain in 1875. He was married to a Mrs. Jervis. Again my guess is that William Brooks Jnr could be our WHE Brooks's father. I can unfortunately found nothing further on this William Brooks and Mrs. Jervis or where Phallah Fountain is.

For both of these BROOKS guys I cannot trace any descendants, and we cannot trace any ancestors and given the information at hand I think I have narrowed down the possiblity to these two BROOKS as being our ancestors, but it is all just educated guesses at the moment.

His research indicated the Joseph BROOKS given in Caroline's DN is the grandson of the 1820 Settler William BROOKS. According to this information William Henry Edward BROOKS and Caroline Margaret BROOKS is the William BROOKS and the Maria Margaretha BROOKS of Joseph BROOKS born 1850 and Maria Margaretha ROOS.

HISTORY OF FARM VERGENOEG

I was first alerted to the possibility that the farm my mother grew up on was once owned by the well-known VILJOEN family when Annelie ELS enquired whether the farm was the Vergenoeg once owned by Jan VILJOEN. At the time I was unaware of the connection, but the name rang a bell and I remembered that my mom had told me that my great grandfather William Henry Edward BROOKS had bought the farm Vergenoeg, Marico, from Georg VILJOEN around 1914. I had no idea who Georg VILJOEN was and what his connection was to Jan VILJOEN.

Then I came across the following e-mail in JUL 2011 which confirmed Annelie's suspicions and I decided I had to find the evidence to prove this:-

Iemand het 'n hele klompie jare gelede vir my 'n paar foto's gestuur van Uitvlucht in die Marico-distrik. Die plaas grens aan Vergenoeg die plaas van die grootwildjagter Jan Viljoen (Vergenoeg genoem omdat hy gedink het hy het toe ver genoeg van die Engelse af weggetrek).

Uitvlucht het behoort aan my voorouer Daniel Johannes Malan (geb ca 1824) wat waarskynlik in die laat 1860's vanaf Wellington na die binneland verhuis het, nadat hy in Wellington bankrot gespeel het. In 1868 trou sy dogter Anna Aletta met my voorouer Willem Daniel Jacobs (geb. ca 1839) en daarna verhuis hy na die Wes-Transvaal. In die vroeë 1890's trek hy terug Wellington toe waar hy in ca 1893 sterf. My oupagrootjie trek saam met hom en so beland ons Jacobse weer in die Boland.

As die persoon wat die foto's vir my gestuur het nog dalk 'n lyslid is en nog steeds die foto's het sal ek dit baie graag weer wil ontvang asseblief.

I recall my mom telling me that my grandfather had attended school on the farm Uitvlucht. I now was sure that my great grandfather's farm Vergenoeg and Jan VILJOEN's farm Vergenoeg were the same farm.

In order to verify that my great grandfather had indeed bought the farm Vergenoegd once owned by Jan VILJOEN, I started by researching Jan VILJOEN from VERGENOEGD and found the following information:-

JAN VILJOEN. 1815-1893.

Viljoen was probably the most significant of the Marico Trekkers who moved into valley in 1848, settling on his farm Vergenoeg, near Zeerust. In 1836 he had been a bywoner (free tenant) on his brother's farm near Outshoorn in the Cape. In 1848 he was captured at the battle of Boomplaats during their conflict with the Orange Free State. As he was a marked man, he trekked into the (later) Transvaal.

From 1850 to 1860 he was Field Cornet for the Marico district, and had a close relationship with most of the local African leaders, in particular Setshele of the baKwena who lived beyond the borders of the South African Republic (SAR). In 1860 he became commandant.

In 1885 he wrote that, "When I settled here with my family everything was wild and I held the frontier so that we now have churches and schools in safe surroundings". It was largely due to his efforts that relatively peaceful relations pertained along the western Transvaal border. However, this does not appear to have been a constant position. In 1853, he seized, as a captive, the son of Setshele, which led to a general state of instability in the Marico.

Part of Viljoen's reason for wanting an undisturbed frontier was because he needed safe access to the trans-Limpopo hunting fields. This required being on good terms with Setshele and his northern ally, Sekgomo of the bamaNgwato. He was indeed an indomitable hunter, hunting for ivory in Shoshong and further north near the Zambezi as early as 1851-1852. Folklore in the Transvaal contends that he saw the Victoria Falls before the explorer David Livingstone, but he never made the claim personally. By 1855 he had entered into an agreement with Mzilikazi of the AmaNdebele granting him access to hunting grounds in Matebeleland. Despite his avowed antipathy to the British, he was on good terms with a number of English "ivory entrepreneurs" such as George Westbeach George "Elephant" Phillips and Courtney Selous.

Viljoen was known to have a short temper and this was revealed on a number of occasions. In 1863-1864 a civil war broke out after M.W. Pretorius became joint President of the Orange Free State and the SAR. Many in the SAR saw the move as an incitement that might provoke British intervention, to the detriment of the political future of both republics. Viljoen backed Pretorius and led a party of Marico boers (the so-called Volkslaer-army of the people) which attacked Paul Kruger's force in Potchefstroom in 1864. In 1868 a party of clerics lead by Ds Lion-Cachet attempted to ride into Marico and establish a branch of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK) in Zeerust. Viljoen, who belonged to the more conservative Gereformeerde Kerk (so called "Doppers") turned them back at the Marico river but they returned a few days later, whereupon Viljoen assaulted Lion-Cachet and his companion with a sjambok, attempted to ride them over with his horse and threw them for a few days into gaol. Johannes Willem (Jan) Viljoen was born in 14 May 1812, Winterhoek. Having moved from Oudtshoorn to the present Orange Free State in 1843, he settled near Winburg, where he joined the Voortrekker group of the population, hostile to H. D. Warden. Together with five others from among the Voortrekker element in Transorangia, he was imprisoned at Colesberg in 1846 for anti-British activities. Released after a few months, he took part in the Battle of Boomplaats and because of this had to flee across the Vaal River. He settled near present-day Zeerust and called his farm Ver Genoeg. His wife, Maria Catherina Messer, daughter of the German missionary J. G. Messer (in the service of the L.M.S.), presented him with fifteen children.

Hunters

Jan Viljoen 1826-1904. - one of the best-known hunters of Ngamiland and Southern Matabeleland. His friendship with Mzilikazi led to his obtaining permission to hunt in Mashonaland in 1865, and he was the first European hunter in that part of the country. He conducted Selous on his first visit to Southern Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, as well as James Chapman on his first hunting trip into the interior.

In 1848 he fought at Boomplaats against the British forces under Colonel Harry Smith, and being one of the wanted men after the fight, he immediately trekked north to where the town of Zeerust now stands and settled on a farm which he called Ver Genoeg (Far Enough), where he died in 1904.

The little Marico River drains a large area. It rises on the farm Rietvlei No. 5 and Groote Afdeeling, and flows in a north-westerly direction to Zeerust...

Numerous fine springs rise in the range of hills which trends due north and south to the south-west of Zeerust, of which the largest are those on Vergenoeg No. 3 or near the common beacon of Vergenoegd No. 3, Uitvlucht No. 63, and Wolvekoppies No. 104. Others rise on Klaarstroom No. 55, Stinkhoutboom No. 269, and Buffelshoek No. 264.

The surface course of the Malmani from Rietpoort is through the farms Kaffirkraal No. 93 and Paardevlei No. 62, crossing the main road from Zeerust to Ottoshoop immediately to the south of Commandant Botha's house.

On the other hand it is equally possible should the reefs be intermittent that the Malmani water flows eastward and nourishes the springs on Vergenoegd and Uitvlucht and Klaarstroom.

3. Geological Structure

The thick diabase at the base of this horizon and the quartzite and shales overlying the Dolomite have all partaken of this movement; a well marked anticline being developed, whose axis is roughly along the quartzite horizon running north and south through the farm Vergenoegd No. 46 and along the western boundary of Kruisrivier No. 154. This is followed to the west by a syncline consisting of the overlying shale and diabase, and the quartzite again reappears in normal sequence on the farms Vergenoegd No. 3, Uitvlucht No. 63, and to the south of the latter farm dipping normally to the east or north-east, and normally overlying the iron stone shales and Dolomite.

I then found a copy of the deed of transfer as well as the plans of the farm Vergenoeg from when my great grandfather bought the farm in 1914. In them were the references of J. G. H. VILJOEN and Johan Georg Hermanus VILJOEN. On researching J. G. H. VILJOEN, I found that his father was indeed Jan VILJOEN who owned the farm Vergenoeg, Marico. Thus it was confirmed that my great grandfather had bought a portion of the farm Vergenoeg once owned by the well-known Jan VILJOEN.

Herewith a transcript of the plans for the portion of the farm Vergenoeg Johan George Hermanus VILJOEN, son of Johannes Willem (Jan) VILJOEN sold to my great grandfather, William Henry Edward BROOKS in about 1914.

GEOCHEMIESE OPNAME MET BEHULP VAN 'N HELIKOPTER

Die Geologiese Opname van Suid-Afrika (Dept. Mineraal en Energiesake) is sedert 1975 besig met 'n sistematiese geochemiese ondersoek van Suid-Afrika. Die ondersoek behels dat een grondmonster per 1 vierkante kilometer (100ha) geneem en later geanaliseer word. Daar word sodoende gepoog om Suid-Afrika se mineraal reserwes ten volle te kan benut, terwyl daar ook verskeie ander toespassings bv. landbou en omgewingsbewaring is. Hierdie program was suksesvol in die Kaapprovinsie en Noord-Transvaal waar meer as 200 000 monsters geneem is.

Vanjaar word daar beplan om in die Delareyville-Mmabatho gebied monsters te neem. Die areas wat deur hierdie program gedek word, word op die aangehegte kaart aangedui. 'n Helikopter word deur die staat gekonkrakteer, wat dit moontlik maak om ongeveer 300 vierkante kilometer daagliks te dek. Die koste word hierdeur aansienlik verminder.

Die sukses van die program kon tot dusver gedeeltelik toegeskryf word aan heelhartige samewerking van grondeienaars en boere. Die bestuur van die Geologiese Opname sou verkies om elke grondeienaar persoonlik in te lig, maar as gevolg van die groot gebied wat gedek word en die feit dat baie van die eienaars nie op die perseel woon nie, is dit nie moontlik nie.

Ons wil u dus graag inlig oor die komende projek. Ons sal vir 'n paar uur besig wees op elke plaas gedurende die tydperk Mei-Augustus 1993. Dit sal ongelukkig nie moontlik wees om aan u die presiese datums te verskaf nie. As daar 'n spesifieke datum is waarop u sou verkies dat ons nie op u plaas monsters neem nie, kan ons die program aanpas. Ons respekteer die feit dat ons op private eiendom werk en sal dus versigtig te werk gaan, veral waar vee en wild betrokke is.

As u enige navrae in hierdie verband het of met enige ander aspekte van die program, moet u asseblief nie huiwer om ons te kontak nie. It is said that he is a descendant of the 1820 settlers. Research indicates 1820 settlers of the surname BROOKS did settle in Namaqualand in the early 1800's.≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>According to his son, Albert Edward BROOKS, he grew up in the foster care of Phillip Henry Ebden THEUNISSEN, born 1846 from the age of a young boy on the farm 'De Rust', Zeerust. [Coordinates: De Rust, latitude of -25.57 (25° 34' 0 S), longitude of 26.02 (26° 1' 0 E), is a farm located in the area of Transvaal in South Africa that is a part of Africa. Their four children were born between 1897 and 1904.≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>When he marriedMargaretha Wilhelmina PRIDDLE in DEC 1904 he indicated that he was from Bechuanaland.≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>He bought the farm 'Vergenoegd' in Zeerust around 1914 from Georg VILJOEN and settled there with his wife Margaretha Wilhelmina PRIDDLE. ≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>He sold the farm to his son Albert Edward BROOKS due to financial difficulties caused by his daughter Emily's first husband, in 1954-1960. On my recent trip to Namibia I learnt about Afrikaners that trekked to SWA and Humpata in Angola in what is known as the Thirstland trek. This took place from after the Great Trek throughout the later half of the 1800's. Hunters and traders made trips there to hunt elephants and trade with the locals as well. The treks started from Springbok and Zeerust areas and many died onthe treks as the conditions were really bad. I have been researching this a little as this seems to be a logical and plausible answer as to why there is no trace of the Brooks untill WHE Brooks arrived in Zeerust. His parents could have died while on the trek and he and his sister were brought to Zeerust to fellow 1820 settler and Afrikaner families that had settled in Zeerust, ie Sephton and Gush, Whitfield etc. There was a James Joseph Brooks in Namaqualand who was part of a large family of which I have traced quite a number of descendants. I am related to this family through my grandmotherJohanna. However, I cannot find any trace of him or any descendants, which may mean that he went on the Thirstland trek. This James Joseph was a descendant of the 1820 settlers. His age etc. fits in with our timeline. Also the practice was to name your firstborn son after your father and following that WHE named his first son James Joseph it is possible that this James Joseph that I cannot trace was WHE's father. ≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>Another possibility I have found is that of a William Brooks and son, William that were in SWA in 1875. Viljoen.≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>JAN VILJOEN. 1815-1893.≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>Viljoen was probably the most significant of the Marico Trekkers who moved into valley in 1848, settling on his farm Vergenoeg, near Zeerust. In 1836 he had been a bywoner (free tenant) on his brother's farm near Outshoorn in the Cape. In 1848 he was captured at the battle of Boomplaats during their conflict with the Orange Free State. As he was a marked man, he trekked into the (later) Transvaal.≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>From 1850 to 1860 he was Field Cornet for the Marico district, and had a close relationship with most of the localAfrican leaders, in particular Setshele of the baKwena who lived beyond the borders of the South African Republic (SAR). In 1860 he became commandant.≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>In 1885 he wrote that, "When I settled here with my family everything was wild and I held the frontier so that we now have churches and schools in safe surroundings". It was largely due to his efforts that relatively peacefulrelations pertained along the western Transvaal border. However, this does not appear to have been a constant position. In 1853, he seized, as a captive, the son of Setshele, which led to a general state of instability in the Marico. ≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>Part of Viljoen's reason for wanting an undisturbed frontier was because he needed safe access to the trans-Limpopo hunting fields. This required being on good terms with Setshele and his northern ally, Sekgomo of the bamaNgwato. He was indeed an indomitable hunter, hunting for ivory in Shoshong and further north near the Zambezi as early as 1851-1852. Folklore in the Transvaal contends that he saw the Victoria Falls before the explorer David Livingstone, but he never made the claim personally. By 1855 he had entered into an agreement with Mzilikazi of the AmaNdebele granting him access to hunting grounds in Matebeleland. Despite his avowed antipathy to the British, he was on good terms with a number of English "ivory entrepreneurs" such as George Westbeach George "Elephant" Phillips and Courtney Selous.≤/p>≤p>≤p>≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p>Viljoen was known to have a short temper and this was revealed on a number of occasions. In 1863-1864 a civil war broke out after M.W. Pretorius became joint President of the Orange Free State and the SAR. Many in the SAR saw the move as an incitement that might provoke British intervention, to the detriment of the political future of both republics. Viljoen backed Pretorius and led a party of Marico boers (the so-called Volkslaer-army of the people) which attacked Paul Kruger's force in Potchefstroom in 1864. In 1868 a party of clerics lead by Ds Lion-Cachet attempted to ride into Marico and establish a branch of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK) in Zeerust. Viljoen, who belonged to the more conservative Gereformeerde Kerk (so called "Doppers") turned them back at the Marico river but they returned a few days later, whereupon Viljoen assaulted Lion-Cachet and his companion with a sjambok, attempted to ride them over with his horse and threw them for a few days into gaol. After these incidents he began to fall out of favour with the SAR's authorities. His wife, Maria Catherina Messer, daughter of the German missionary J. G.
