History of Cemetery Lovrinac

In the twenties of the last century, when the cemetery on Sustipan became precarious, the municipal administration redeems land parcels in the Splitsko polje in the Tršćeće area for a new cemetery. The present-day Split cemetery Lovrinac under the original name of the Pope was opened by the municipal decision on April 1, 1928. His dedication took place on 15 April of the same year.

The first Splinic person who found peace among the young cedars of the newly devoted kennel was thirty nine-year-old Kata Marjanovic, born Devivi, wife of Duje Marjanovic, a coastal worker who was buried on April 16, 1928 on the expense of the municipality.

On the occasion of the Day of the Dead in 1929, the municipality also erected a simple stone monument on which, as a permanent seal, remain engraved words about the first inhabitants of the cemetery. Split, in April 1928, on the eastern entrance to the city, in the Splitsko polje on the elevated plateau that steals the beauty of the nearby sea and maps it to the adjacent gorgeous Mosor grottoes, gets a new City cemetery. The embankment changes its name to Lovrinac next year, which is acquired by the nearby church of St. Lawrence. One year after the opening, there is a need for its expansion outside the landscaped area, and the municipality on 10 April 1929 selects the contractor for the new fencing. The graveyard is constantly widening in an effort to retain the basic design plans for certain projects that have been constructed in accordance with the configuration of the terrain, but due to the beginning of the Second World War, plans have been neglected and do not respect the geometric regularity and died unplanned and unsystematically burial over a four-year period when the Italian and the German cemetery. After the war, the rushes were unbroken and the rules had no end, and as the graveyard did not invest much, all the projects remained unresolved regularly, and the graveyard slightly lost the attributes of the modern graveyard. In the early 1960s, when the last bones buried on Sustipan before the destruction of the old cemetery, in the western part of Lovrinca, the seed of the future Partisan park, Memorial of the fallen warriors, was erected in the form of a rocky oval shaped cave, according to the original design of B. Pervan from 1948. It was an incentive to launch the most basic works, such as car parking, building an administrative building, setting up kiosks for selling flowers and arranging a public toilette. The first works on the separated water supply network were made, which was not yet sufficient and asphalted 2200 square meters of pedestrian crossings.

In the "Parkovi i nasadi" company, a grave and horticultural group is set up, which takes care of burglars, the management of cemetery books, records of graves and tombs, which is reflected in the overall appearance of the cemetery. The construction and quarrying group contribute to better construction and a more beautiful appearance of the tomb. In the seventies, this Split-based company of general public interest can offer its fellow citizens a single place of service at a high professional level. There was also time to revive Lovrinca's design initiatives according to contemporary European standards, fitted to the default ambience and existing gravestones. In December 1971, a general competition was launched for the conceptual, spatial, landscape and architectural solution of the Lovrinac cemetery and the Spomen-park to the palatine NOR fighters within the Split cemetery. Of the ten received works, three were redeemed, though the main prize was not awarded. The competition was announced in October 1974 and requested that the awarded teams of experts elaborate the previous projects and it was decided to arrange the cemetery according to the project so doc. Miroslav Kollenza from Zagreb. Some of the moments of this award-winning project have been realized in the following years, while some are still in the process of being realized. The specialty of the Split cemetery is a horticultural wealth, nurtured and refined for 80 years - from the first myrtle trees and roses dating from 1924 to the recently planted young fir trees. It is the spells, the eternal guards over the graves of our beloved, most recognizable symbols of the Split city cemetery.

The Lovrinac cemetery consists of several parts that were created during its history: the children's cemetery, the fields of the killed war veterans of the Homeland War, the German Cemetery, the memorial park of the NOR fighters, the Vranjica cemetery, the Jewish cemetery.

One of the worst parts of the Lovrinac cemetery is a children's cemetery that embraces two centrally-oriented east-facing fields. 1950 small tombs, mostly covered with white stone and flowers, and angels, are certainly the worst part of the cemetery. The German cemetery is located at the beginning of the Lovrinac cemetery, and was only in 1998 as a memorial cemetery. It was edited by the German Cattle Alliance (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfursorge) to commemorate soldiers whose bones lie in this area. So far, five hundred and thirty such graves have been arranged, and it is expected that members of the Bundeswehr will spend up to three thousand and two hundred deaths from the wider area of Split. With the presence of German Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia, Dr. Volkero Haak, German Honorary Consul in Split Karla Grenac, and relatives of the dead as well as some former participants from Germany and Austria, the cemetery was blessed by Fr. Nedjeljko Ante Ančić in June 1998.

Within the overall tender for the design of the Lovrinac cemetery, the idea of the architectural group doc was accepted. Miroslav Kollenza to build a Memorial Park faced by NOR fighters. Fully embedded in the ambience, he found expression in a simple statement that draws materials in Dalmatian stone and coniferous cover and achieves a goal of orientation to the already existing skeleton. The memorial park enters the South via a circular memorial site designed to gather visitors from which the stone path leads through two American cemetery grazing burials, where white stone pillars are properly arranged like soldiers in a colon that does not cease, point out the names of the fighters of this area killed in II world war. The symmetry of the overall ambience, the horizontal balance that with the monolithic monumentality accentuates the interior of the darkness, preserves the names of all the famous NOR victims of the Split area, with the harmony, peace and piety.

Lovrinac experienced particularly difficult moments during the Homeland War when the annual number buried from 700 to 900 increased to more than 1000. The western part of the cemetery is worn with the most seriously colored white because it is the one that applies to us youth. More than three hundred young men who died on all fronts across our Beautiful, there was rest in the newly restored cemetery where a new Central Cross was erected. Numerous graves worn with parental tears in the cross are covered with pain and memories yet fresh ungrateful. The Day of Homeland Thanksgiving, 5th of August, is mentioned when, with the honorable crowds of supporters, heals pain and revives memories of war years, a stormy victory with a centenary dream. The youth who drove us into life in the Homeland War Split decided to pick up the Memorial Park on the western extension of Lovrinca, south of the circular memorial part of the Spomen-park paladin of NOR fighters. Project Miomira Dragovića, dipl.ing.arh. In January 1997, the Association of Parents of Defected Defenders was adopted. In the outskirts of this cemetery there was a special 520 meter high cross with appropriate parble stone slabs and a place for laying wreaths and candles. The cross would be a semi-circular extension enough to gather when giving honor to the defendants. This square would fit into the existing enviroment of cypresses and pines that will represent the natural green wall as the backdrop and contrast of the white stone cross.

Povijest groblja Lovrinac

Građevinska i klesarska grupa pridonose kvalitetnijoj izgradnji i ljepšem izgledu grobnica.

Brojni grobovi oplakani roditeljskim suzama u križu ukrštavaju patnju i sjećanja još svježa nepreboljena.
