Several names of those killed during World War II are missing from Tauranga’s war memorials. This page is an attempt to list those Tauranga people who served and lost their lives during the Second World War. The project started in 2014 and is a collaboration between Fiona Kean and Debbie McCauley. To meet the criteria, people need to have lived in Tauranga, enlisted from Tauranga, or already be listed on a local memorial. Tauranga’s Fifteenth Avenue is the site of two rows of totara trees which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945). They are known as the ‘Memorial Grove.’
