Origin of the Surname Gulick is from "Jülich (German pronunciation: [%CB%88jy%CB%90l%C9%AA%C3%A7]; in old spellings also known as Guelich or Gülich, Dutch: Gulik, French: Juliers) a town in the district of Düren, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Jülich is first mentioned in Roman times as Juliacum and was named to honor the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. Juliacum was a fortified Roman city on the main road from Roman to the far out reaches of the Roman Empire northern Europe and Britain. As a border region between the competing powers in the Lower Rhine and Meuse areas, the town and the Duchy of Jülich played a historic role from the Middle Ages up to the 17th century. [1] [2] [3]
