About the Seth surname

The surname "SETH" has a Christian origin and a Hindu origin. Both surnames are un-connected to each other.

The Christian surname "SETH", presumably comes from the name of Adam and Eve's third son, "Seth", which means "appointed". (Arabic: شيث, Shith). Seth was born after Cain killed Abel, when Adam was 130 years old. The first two sons being "Cain" and "Abel". (Hebrew: קין ,הבל, Hevel, Qayin) (Arabic: هابيل قابيل - Hābīl and Qābīl) - Source: Wikipedia.

The Hindu surname "Seth" probably derives from the title "Seth" usually given to a wealthy person. The "Seth" family is related to the "Mehra" family ("Mehra" is the same as "Malhotra") and the "Khanna" family ("Khanna" is the same as "Kapoor").

The following information was given by Rajendra Nath Seth, of GK-1, New Delhi to Kabir Seth, of Kolkata, in November 2010:

"The original name of the "Seth" family was "Kakkar" when they were located in the North West Frontier Province of India. The part of the "Kakkar" family that moved to Punjab called themselves "Seth". Those who stayed behind in the NWFP retained the name "Kakkar"."

The following information was given by Naresh Seth, son of Narinder Nath (Nini) Seth on 16th Feb 2011:

"At a recent wedding of my niece (Mona's sister's daughter- who are also seths) I learnt that the gotra of Seths is "VATSA" and duggals were "KASHYAP"." I am karan kakkar, also called kakkar Seth , I am from jalandhar(Punjab) please tell me the place of our jathere i.e. where are kakkar Seth jathere. My email I'd is sunny_solitaire@yahoo.com. thanks and regards to all my kakkar Seth families.

There is another Seth, which is pronounced as Shet (also written as Xet). The origin of this name is the Daivadnya Brahmins who were goldsmiths. Mangalore (Karnataka, India) has a lot of Shets and they are still jewellers or goldsmiths. Some Catholic families in Goa and Mangalore also use the name Shet or Seth as an addendum to their last names (e.g D'Souza-Seth). (Source: Geo Seth geo.seth@gmail.com)
