John CHIPMAN, elder, was born in 1614 in Bryan’s-Piddle, near Dorchester, England; died on 7 Apr 1708 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA; buried in Sandwich, Barnstable,MA.

TRAVEL: Brotherless and early left fatherless, John sailed from Barnstable, Devon Co., England, in May 1631, on the Friendship, arriving in Boston, 14 July 1631. John was the first and only one of the name, Chipman, in this country, and until 1850 there was no Chipman in this country who was not descended from him.{D2}

MARRIAGE: He first married Hope Howland, when she died, he secondly married Ruth Sargent. John Chipman lists his living children in his Will, dated 12 Nov 1702. {D1}{D2}

LIVELIHOOD: John was a carpenter and deputy.{D5} Also, “John Chipman was for successive years a selectman, then in Plymouth Colony invested with the authority of a magistrate, and was often a deputy of the court; and he with three assistants was designated to frequent the early Quaker meetings and ‘endeavor to reduce them from the errors of their wayes’.”

HOME: Plymouth in 1637, Yarmouth in 1647, and Barnstable in 1649.{D5} The elder John Chipman family homestead was located near the Barnstable Custom House. His son, Samuel, built the “Chipman Tavern” on the homestead, which then continued in the line of his prosperity until 1830.{D2}

RELIGION: On 30 Jun 1653, John joined his wife (Hope Howland) in becoming a member of the church at Barnstable. He became an Elder in Minister Russel’s Congregational Church at Barnstable.{D4}

HISTORICAL NOTE: John Chipman, son-in-law of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley signed his name (at age 58) to a Bond of Administration on the John Howland estate, dated 5 March 1672, see also Elizabeth Tilley notes. {D3}

DEATH John died at 88 years of age.

Briantspuddle is  situated within the Piddle Valley near to the villages of Affpuddle,  Tolpuddle and  Puddletown and approximately eight miles east of the county town of Dorchester. The village takes its name from Brian de Turberville, who was lord of the manor during the reign of Edward III and is in the Purbeck conservation. ... John’s parents were Thomas CHIPMAN and [__?__].  He was 17 when he came to New England in May, 1637, in the service of his cousin Mr. Richard Derby, who settled in Plymouth ..."

Some sources show that the wife of Thomas had the maiden name of Derby.<ref name=Chipman>Chipman, Bert Lee. The Chipman Family, a genealogy of the Chipmans in America, 1631-1920. Bert L. Chipman, Publisher.Winston-Salem, N.C. 1920. pp. 13-14.</ref> She could have been Derby-6|Ann Derby or Derby-161|Patience Derby, who were sisters of John Derby. Two sources state John Chipman was born about 1614. However, Find a Grave has a photo of his headstone that says he died age 88 in 1708, which puts his DOB about 1621.<ref>Swain, WilliamChester. Biography

John Hale Chipman was born about 1621 in Brinspittal, Dorset, England,son of Chipman-53|Thomas Chipman. He was baptized at Brinspittal<ref> 'Brinspittal is a ‘phonetic' corruption of ‘Briantspuddle', a small hamlet in Dorset, Dictionary of English Place names. The name seems to havebeen in the Doomsday Book under the general' name of Pidele which istranslated as being an estate on the River (in this case, a lesser Trent) and from 1452, this particular one was owned by a man called Brian. It is located approx. midway between Dorchester and Poole and liesa little south of the A35 main road. Nearest town is Bere Regis but the famous Tolpuddle (another :extraction of Pidele) is about 2- 3 miles NW.</ref> on 30 Aug 1621. John died on 7 Apr 1708 at Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.<ref name=Pane> Pane-Joyce Genealogy. Bert Lee Chipman writes of John in his Chipman Genealogy, "Always brotherless and early left fatherless, he sailed from Barnstable, Devon County, England, in May 1631, in the ship Friendship, arriving in Boston, July 14, 1631. He and three assistants were assigned to frequent the early Quaker meetings and "endeavor to reduce them from the error of their wayes."<ref name=Chipman /> By 1637 John had moved to Barnstable.<ref name=Oatis /> He was apprenticed as a carpenter by trade and was also called yeoman in land records. John married twice. About 1645 or 1646 he married his first wife, Howland-22|Hope Howland. She was the daughter of Howland-21|John Howland and Tilley-73|Elizabeth Tilley, who met while passengers onthe Mayflower.<ref name=Shaw>Shaw. After John's first wife, Hope Howland, died in 1683, he married widow Sargent-53|Ruth Sargent Winslow in 1684. They had no children.<refname=Chipman /> They lived at Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.<ref name=Shaw /> John Chipman passed away 7 Apr 1708 <ref name=Chipman /><ref name=Shaw /> and is buried at Sandwich Cemetery.<ref name=grave /> John Chipman's will, dated 12 Nov 1702, proved 17 May 1708, mentions his wife Ruth; children Samuel, John, Elizabeth, Hope, Lydia, Hannah, Ruth, Bethiah, Mercy and Desire; grandchildren Mary Gale and Jabez Dimock; and his friend Mr. (Rev.) He married Hope HOWLAND on September 13, 1646 in Plymouth, MA. More on: Elder John CHIPMAN born about 1620-1; came toNE May 1637 in service of his cousin Mr. Richard Derby who settled inPlymouth; carpenter; freeman 1649; of Barnstable 1649 joined the church 1/30/1652-3 & chosen one of Ruling Elders; died in Sandwich 4/7/1708 age 88; for his public services the court in 1669 granted him 100 acres of land between Taunton and Titicut, which was afterwards confirmed to him."


GEDCOM Note

He was the only son of Mr. Thomas Chipman. He came to Plymouth 1630-1, in service of his cousin Richard Darby, whose father was custodian of certain money due him from the estate of his father. He settled at Barnstable and was admitted to the church Jan 30, 1652; he was a ruling elder, town officer and deputy.

The “Chipman Family” says his birth was about 1614. Also in the “Sketch of the Chipman Family” in NEHGS Register.

At age 16 John Chipman arrived in New England in 1637 as a servant to his cousin Richard Derby. Chipman eventually became a ruling Elder of the West Barnstable church, a deputy for the town of Barnstable, and town clerk.

GEDCOM Note

He moved eartly to Sandwich, from there to Chilmark on Martha’s Vinyard and finally to Newport, RI. While at Martah’s Vinyard he was one of the Justices of the Court and after moving to Newport he was an assistant to the governor.
