Note
The date of John's inscribed death is a pre-1752 Julian calendar date, who actually died in the post-1751 modern Gregorian calendar on February 2, 1689. In addition, based on the inscribed word "Ætatis", on the day John died he was 36 years old and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age, etc.) 37, meaning he was born AFTER February 2, 1652 in the modern calendar.
Biography
Rev. John Mayhew was born in 1651 in Edgartown, Dukes, Massachusetts Bay to Thomas Mayhew II and Jane (Unknown) Sarson. He is the brother of Matthew Mayhew, Thomas Mayhew III, Jerusha Mayhew, Jedidah (Mayhew) Smith and Mehitable (Sarson) Lothrop [half]. He married Elizabeth (Hilliard) Mayhew in 1673 in Martha's Vineyard, West Tisbury, Dukes, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He is the father of Experience Mayhew, John Mayhew, Elizabeth (Mayhew) Allen, Benjamin Mayhew, Deborah (Mayhew) Norton and Simon Mayhew. John died on 2 Feb 1688 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts Bay. [3]
In 1673, John married at Martha’s Vineyard, Elizabeth Hilliard,[2] daughter of Emanuel Hilliard and Elizabeth Parkhurst, of Hampton, NH. She was born 22 Jan 1654-5 and died in 1746. She came to the Vineyard as stepdaughter of Joseph Merry of West Tisbury.[3] John Mayhew was a well-known clergyman of Tisbury and Chilmark, and a short sketch of his career may be read in Vol. II, pp. 32-4 Annals of Chilmark. Only five years old when his father died, he, like his father, died at the early age of 37, on 2 Feb 1688. He is buried at West Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts.[3][4]
In his last Sickness he expressed a Desire if it were the Divine Will, that he might live a while longer, to have seen his Children a little grown up before he died, and to have done more Service for Christ on the Earth. ... He counselled, exhorted and incouraged his Relatives and others who came to visit him: And with respect to himself, among other things, said, "He was persuaded that God would not place him with those after his Death, in whose Company he could take no Delight in his Life-time.[5] John, "minister of ye gospell to ye inhabitants of Tisbury & Chilmark united & to ye Christian Indians," Feb. 2, 1688, a. 37.[6] Children of John Mayhew and Elizabeth Hilliard
