In the wooded land along Brown Co. in section 16, John Hoag settled in 1837. For years a small party of Indians came annually to hunt, to trade, and to receive Mr. Hoag's gifts of food and clothing. The old chief of the group gave Mr. Hoag a necklace of claws, teeth and other primitive ornaments which had been an heirloom in the Indian's family and which is now in the Stephenson County Historical Museum, the gift of Mr. Hoag's grandson, J.E. Hoag, whose father Dr. Edward J. Hoag practiced medicine for many years in and around Ribott. The Hoag homestead in Rock Run was one of the first brick houses in this part of the country.
