About Bessie May Pell

Bessie M. Pell, daughter of George and Nancy Strait Lawrence, was born March 6, 1892 near Brooks, Iowa and passed away July 29, 1974 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning where she had been a resident since April of 1972, having attained the age of 82 years, 4 months and 23 days.

She grew up in the Brooks community, attended public school there, participated in the activities of the Methodist Church and gained a well deserved reputation for cheerfulness which she maintained all her life.

On January 11, 1911 she was united in marriage to Harry M. Pell who preceded her in death in August of 1953. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Hackett of Omaha, Nebraska. They spent all of their married life in the Corning vicinity.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Pell was preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie Bunting, Dollie Spring, Emma Wilcox, and Phoebe Wilmarth; three brothers, Rolly, Jake and Floyd Lawrence; her son-in-law, Arthur Hackett; and a granddaughter in infancy, Susan’s twin sister Nancy Ruth.

Surviving to mourn her passing are daughter, Ruth, and two granddaughters, Diana and Susan of Omaha; two sisters, Jessie Schafroth and Ruby Harlow, both of Corning, as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning July 31 at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. James King. Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Music was provided by Diane Peckham. Pallbearers were Kenneth Bunting, Bill Gearheart, Frank Davis, Rolly Spring, Dale Jackson and Jean Brown.
