About George Roland Lawrence

Adams County Free Press, Corning, Iowa Thursday, September 15, 1938, Page 20 ---George Roland Lawrence, (Rolly) son of George T. and Emeline Lawrence, and generally known as Rolla Lawrence, was born January 30, 1878, near Brooks, Iowa, and died September 8, 1938, at 5:55 a.m. in the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa. ---For 15 years he had lived and been a trusted employee at the Baldwin home near Brooks, Iowa, where he was devoted to the interests of this elderly pioneer family consisting of two brothers and a sister, and of whom only the sister, Miss Minvera Baldwin, is still living. ---Mr. Lawrence is survived by his widow, Mrs. Fay Lawrence, of Brooks, Iowa, six sisters and two brothers and many nieces and nephews. His parents and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Dollie Spring, preceded him in death. The brothers and sisters are: J. S. Lawrence, Mrs. Emma Wilcox, Mrs. Phoebe Wilmarth, Mrs. Jessie Schafroth, Mrs. Ruby Harlow, Floyd Lawrence, Mrs. Bessie Pell and Mrs. Nellie Bunting, all of whom reside in Adams County. ---Mr. Lawrence was a conscientious worker, a dependable friend and was well liked in his community. His sudden passing was a distinct shock and brought sorrow to a large circle of friends who grieve with the family. ---He was accidentially injured by the discharge of an automatic revolver which he was cleaning and from which he had previously removed the magazine containing the shells, but neglected to remove the shell which was lodged in the barrel of the gun. The bullet entered his body close to the heart and passed in a downward direction through a kidney. At the time of the accident Mr. Lawrence was visiting with Garfield Coleman, who was sitting only a few feet from him at the time the gun was discharged. He was conscious until the time of his death and could not recall anything which he did that would have caused the gun to be discharged. ---Funeral services were held from the Brooks Methodist Church Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Z.M. Bressler, and burial was made in the Baldwin Cemetery, Brooks. Music was furnished by John Riegel and Esther Roland, with Mrs. Hollis Roland, accompanist. Pall bearers were Beach Barker, Arthur Odell, Frank Walters, Melvin Myers, George Isman, Ernest Lawrence.
