Melrose Anzeiger Friday Febuary 3, 1899, page 2

From Avon comes to us the sorrowful news that last Friday, the 27th of January Mr Hermann J. Mahren, well prepared by the reception of the viaticum has died. He was one of the most highly estemed citizen of the neighborhood, a German to the core and a practicing Catholic in the fullest sense of the word, along with these charactestics. He combined these of a loyal husband and family father. In him Stearns County loses a respected and useful citizen, whose heart was always concerned with the welfare of his fellow human beings. The deceased was born on 13 December 1842 in Marmagen, Govern Adm, District of Achen (Sic,AACHEN or Aix La Chapelle)and married in the year 1864. Two years later he came to America with his family, and settled near Chaska in the this state, where upon he came to Avon where he stayed until his death. He was a brother to the [http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=maehren&GSmid... Rev. Pancratius] O.S.B. of Freeport, and the local wagon maker Casper Mahren. He leaves, besides his sorrowing wife, 12 children, of whom, the oldest son, Casper (sic) is married and is in service here in Melrose as an Engineer on the Great Northern Railroad. The oldest daughter, [http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Linnertz&GSby... Mrs. Linnertz], lives in Minot, North Dakoda. On Monday the burial took place at the cemetery was conducted by Rev. Father Pancratius with the assistance of Rev. Zeller Pastor of the Parish, with the attendance of a large body of mourners, may he rest in peace is the greatest wish of the Anzeiger.
