A Patriot of the American Revolution for PENNSYLVANIA. DAR Ancestor # A012104

James Boone, Sr., was born in Bradnich, Devonshire, England on July 7, 1709. He was the son of George Boone III and his wife Mary Maugridge. When James was about 9, he emigrated with the rest of his family to Pennsylvania. The family eventually settled in Berks County.

On January 25, 1735, James Boone and Mary Foulk declared their marital intentions and they were married on May 5, 1735. She was the daughter of Hugh and Anne Foulke. She was born in North Wales, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, on December 5, 1714. James and Mary had twelve children. She died in Exeter, Berks County, on February 20, 1756, and was buried at the Exeter Friends Burying Ground, Exeter, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Many sources show James' name as James Maugridge Boone, however, the Boone Family Association has not adopted this middle name in any of their documentation. Many sources will show his wife as Mary Milton Foulke, but the Boone Family Association has not adopted this middle name in any of their documentation.

James married Anne Griffith on October 26, 1757, 20 months after the death of his late wife. Anne was born on January 29, 1713. There were no children from the second marriage.

James was appointed an overseer for the Exeter MM on December 1737. He served in this role three more times before 1757. He was the clerk of the Men’s Monthly Meeting between 1746/7 and 1749. In the secular world, James Boone was a justice of the Peace for Berks County between 1752 and 1755 and represented Berks County in the Provincial Assembly in 1758. Throughout most of the last half of the eighteenth century, James Boone also was one of the wealthiest men in Exeter Township, operating a prosperous tannery and farm.

During the American Revolution, he supported the colonial cause. According to the Daughters of American Revolution, he gave "patriotic service," and has been given the Ancestor #: A012104.

James Boone, Sr, died September 1, 1785, on the fifth day of the week, at ten minutes after nine o'clock at night, in the 77th year of his age; and was decently interred in Friends Burying-Ground at Exeter on the seventh day of the same week. He (with his parents, etc.) left Great Britain in the 9th year of his age and lived almost 68 years in Pennsylvania. When he was born, it was between 9 & 10 at night in Pennsylvania and he died between 9 & 10 at Night.

Note: Family notes were carefully kept by James' brother John which he later turned over to his nephew James Boone Jr. Their preoccupation with exact hours of birth and death and the latitudes and longitudes suggests an interest in astrology. They also may have been students of numerology.

James left a will that can still be found in the "Abstracts of Berks County Wills, Vol. 1, pages 155 & 443. His will is very detailed and, in it, he names all his children still alive at that date - Anne, Mary, Martha, James, Judah, Joshua, Rachel and Moses. In addition, he makes bequests to grandchildren Hannah, John, James, and Susannah, and a bequest to Sarah Biddle, who had been the widow of son John but had since remarried. The full text of his will can be read here --
