John Dunlop, here treated, is the son of James Dunlop, 3rd of Garnkirk and his wife Lilias Campbell He is reported to have been born on 1 August 1702. He was probably born at Garnkirk. [Newsletter of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society, No. 47 Autumn 1996, p. 14] His baptism was registered on 27 August 1702, at Cadder in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The name of his mother is not mentioned in his baptismal records. [National Records of Scotland, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1743, reference OPR.626/1]

On 3 January 1720 John Dunlop, here treated, was apprenticed to Francis Congalton, chirugeon-apothecary in Edinburgh. [Register of Edinburgh Apprentices, 1701-55: 29] The apprenticeship was to run for seven years, for which the fee of 950 merks was due. His brother James Dunlop, 4th of Garnkirk was his cautioner.
