James Dunlop of Garnkirk, here treated, is the son of James Dunlop of Garnkirk and his wife Elizabeth Roberton. [Newsletter of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society, No. 47 Autumn 1996, p. 12] He was born before 3 May 1655, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, in the pre-union Kingdom of Scotland. On 1 September 1687 James Dunlop of Garnkirk, here treated, was served as heir to his deceased father in the lands of Garnkirk and Casnockhill. Inquisitionum Ad Capellam Domini Regis Retornatarum, etc. II

Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow

James Dunlop of Garnkirk was enrolled as a burgess and guild brother of Glasgow on 27 September 1708. He was admitted in right of his being the eldest son of his deceased father, James Dunlop of Garnkirk, burgess and guild brother of Glasgow. His entry money was waived because of his good service. His Last Will and Testament

James Dunlop of Garnkirk made his last will and testament on 6 December 1709, at Garnkirk in the parish of Cadder in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Confirmation was granted on 16 August 1720.
