James Dunlop of Garnkirk, here treated, is the son of James Dunlop of Garnkirk and his wife Elizabeth Roberton. [Newsletter of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society, No. 47 Autumn 1996, p. 12] He was born before 3 May 1655, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, in the pre-union Kingdom of Scotland. James Dunlop of Garnkirk was enrolled as a burgess and guild brother of Glasgow on 27 September 1708. He was admitted in right of his being the eldest son of his deceased father, James Dunlop of Garnkirk, burgess and guild brother of Glasgow. His entry money was waived because of his good service.
