John Dunlop is the son of James Dunlop of Garnkirk, and his wife, Elizabeth Roberton. The late Donald Whyte has this to say of him: "John, who was trained for merchantile pursuits in Holland, and while at Rotterdam met Bishop Burnet and some of the Scottish Merchants who became involved in the ill-fated Darien Scheme. He settled in London and went on business to New York in 1683. Not long afterwards, probably in November of the same year, he died at Curacio.
