Margaret Dunlop is the daughter of James Dunlop of Garnkirk, and his wife, Elizabeth Roberton. She was born before 17 November 1676, the date upon which her baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Her baptismal record reads as follows: "Ja: Dunlope of Garnkirk & Elizabeth Robertoune a l. dochr Margt Witnesss Ja: Dunlope of Housill Mr Ard Robertoune of Bedlay".
