James Dunlop of Garnkirk, here treated, is the only son of John Dunlop of Garnkirk and his wife Bessie Dunlop. He was born before 10 December 1633, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His baptismal record reads as follows: "Mr Jon Dunlap and Bessy Dunlap ane l. sone James Godfthrs James Dunlap and James Stewart elder." Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow
James Dunlop of Garnkirk was enrolled as a burgess and guild brother of the burgh of Glasgow on 28 February 1670. He was admitted in right of him being the only son of his deceased father, Mr. John Dunlop of Garnkirk, merchant in Glasgow, burgess and guild brother of Glasgow. James R. Death
James Dunlop of Garnkirk, here treated, is reported to have died in 1695. [Newsletter of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society, No. 47 Autumn 1996, p. 11] He certainly died before 1 September 1687, when his son James was served as his heir in the lands of Garnkirk and Casnockhill. James DUNLOP, 2nd. of Garnkirk. Born in 1633, James died in February 1695; he was 62. On 5 April 1654, when James was 21, he married Elizabeth ROBERTSON [Note 1] of Bedlay, daughter of James ROBERTSON of Bedlay, Lord Bedlay & Isabel CAMPBELL of Loudoun, in Bedlay [Note 2], Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was born in about 1633. Elizabeth died in August 1695; she was 62. They had the following children: (1) James (1655-1719) (2) John (1657-1683) (3) William (1662-) (4) Alexander (1666-) (5) Thomas (1668-) (6) Archibald (1672-) (7) Jean (1665-) (8) Elizabeth (1670-) (9) Margaret (1676-)
Note: (1) It was Elizabeth Roberton (aka Elizabeth Robertoune) who married James Dunlop of Garnkitk. Her father was James Roberton of Bedlay. Robertson is a different surname.
[Note 2] Loudoun is in Ayrshire. It is not in Bedlay in Lanarkshire.
