About Mary Elizabeth Moore

6 Mary Elizabeth Laird, b on Kerr's Creek, in Rockbridge Co., Va, Jan. 30, 1850, and d Jan. 13, 1883. She was a gentle, modest lady, and a most exemplary christian. She= Samuel R. Moore, son of Dr. Thos. S. Moore and Elizabeth L. Wilson, Jan. 8, 1873. Mr. Moore was educated at Washington College, Va; served with distinction in the Confederate army, in Company I, 4th Va Infantry (College Company), Stonewall Brigade; and having been severely wounded was transferred to Company C, 1st Va Cavalry, and he was again badly wounded. He was engaged in farming in his native county for a number of years after the war between the States, and became Treasurer of Rockbridge Co., Va, July 1, 1889, and has served with great efficiency as such, continuously ever since. He is an elder in the Lexington Presbyterian Church. He married, as his second wife, Lelia St.C. Stuart, daughter of Rev. Samuel D. Stuart and Cornelia St.C. Waddell, of Abingdon, Va, Sept. 10, 1890.

  • [b] Harry Preston Moore, b Aug. 28. 1880, died July 21, 1898. He was of the best type of young manhood, fair and spirited, pure, gentle, amiable and intellectual, child of the covenant and a member of the visible church, and was suddenly cut down in the vigor of youth,without a moment's warning. He and a number of his associates from Lexington, Va, were on a hunting and fishing excursion in an adjoining county (Bath) and had pitched their tents along a beautiful stream, preparatory to the enjoyment of the innocent sport they had anticipated, when suddenly a gun in the hands of one his best friends, was accidentally discharged, and Harry was mortally wounded.
