Among the first European settlers in South Africa (Cape Colony) the greatest number came from The Netherlands, France and Germany. Poles, alongside the British, Scandinavians and Portuguese were less numerous, but would also come into the area later on. Up to the end of the 18th century, the ancestors of such contemporary Afrikaner families as Drosky, Jankowitz, Knoop, Kroll, Kube, Troskie, Schonraad and Zowietsky had come in from Poland. Before the Cape Colony was formally transferred under British rule (in 1814), the aforementioned settlers had been joined by the founders of the Barensky, Beirowski, Jewaskiewitz, Kitshoff, Koleske, Latsky, Masureik and Valensky families. During the 19th century successive Poles settled there, giving the origins for dozens of new families (such as the Ankiewicz, Aproskie, Banas, Baransky, Czapiewski, Dobrowski, Dubiel, Gregorowski, Henfling, Hohowsky, Jacoby-Grabowski, Juritz, Lazarus, Liss, Litkie, Manthey, Neizel, Pachonick, Prozesky, Robeck, Schukala, Skorbinski, Skowronek, Waberski, Weimann and Woicichowsky families). These consecutive waves of migration increased the Polish contribution to the formation of the South African society.
