About Capt William Robertson, of Beverley Manor

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR # A097178 Patriotic Service, Contributed Supplies.

William Robertson (1720-1812) was a son of James Robertson & Rebecca Royston. He was born in County Antrim, Ireland & emigrated to America.

William Robertson enlisted with many young men from Augusta County to fight the Shawnee during the "Great Scare" of 1774. He previously fought for King George III against the Shawnee and then the Cherokee in the Shenandoah Valley. Following the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he supported his new Country in providing supplies to the war effort.

On March 16, 1778 he was qualified as Captain of the Augusta County Militia, of which he was most proud to serve.

William was a farmer and owned a saw mill on the Middle River in Augusta County, VA. His grandson, Isaac White also built and operated a saw mill on White's Mill Road in Blount County, TN. (He must have learned this from his grandfather).

William Robertson (1720-1812) was the husband of Lettice Kerr (1724-1775). According to his will, there were 12 children named; however only 7 are listed here:

  • Jane or Jean Robertson Givens (1750-1812).
  • Letitia Robertson Rankin (1750-1820).
  • Rebecca Robertson White (1752-?).
  • Alexander Robertson (1753-1801).
  • Sarah Robertson Allison (1760-1791).
  • Elizabeth R Robertson Douglass (1761-1838).
  • Matthew Robertson (1768-1836).

Note: According to Early Settlers of Augusta County, VA "William Robertson (Beverly Manor NE, 473 acres acquired from his father in law, James Kerr in 1764) b 2/6/1718, Coleraine, Northern Ireland, d 1812 Augusta County, VA, married Letitia Kerr, daughter of James Kerr. William was a son of James Robertson."

Burial in Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fort Defiance, Augusta County, VA.

Birth: Feb. 6, 1720
County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Death: Oct. 17, 1812
Augusta County
Virginia, USA

He was the son of James Robertson and Rebecca Royston.

He married Lettice Kerr in Augusta County, Virginia. On 20 March 1770 he is listed in the County Records as the administrator of the estate of his father-in-law, James Kerr.

William enlisted with many of the men of Augusta County to fight the Shawnee during the great scare of 1774. William was a true warrior. He fought for King George III before the Revolutionary War, against the Shawnee and the Cherokee in the Shenandoah Valley and then, after war broke out he supported the revolutionary effort against the Redcoats.

William was a farmer and owned a saw mill on the Middle River in Augusta County. Perhaps this is where his grandson, Isaac White got the knowledge to build and operate a saw mill on White's Mill Road in Blount County, Tennessee.
On 16 March 1778 he was qualified as a Captain of the Augusta County militia. This service and having supplied provisions to the militia qualifies him as a Revolutionary War ancestor.

On the Augusta County tax rolls he is shown as owning 8 slaves in 1782. His son-in-law, David White, owned 6 slaves. William and Lettice Robertson had twelve known children that we can identify from William's will and other Augusta County, Virginia records. We descend from their fourth child and fourth daughter, Rebecca. She married David White.
