About Johann Warkentin Wohlgemuth

John W. Wohlgemuth was born on November 13, 1903, at Giroux, Manitoba, to Cornelius and Maria Warkentin Wohlgemuth. He passed away in the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on June 26, 1992, reaching the age of eighty-eight years.

He grew up in the Giroux, Manitoba, area.

In his youth Dad felt the need of his Savior. Upon the confession of his faith he was baptized by Min. A. G. Ensz on June 11, 1919, joining the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. To these vows he endeavored to be faithful, leaving us the assurance he was ready to meet his Redeemer. He was looking forward to going to his eternal home.

On March 7, 1926, he found his life's companion in Helena Hiebert of Langdon, North Dakota, with whom he shared life's joys and sorrows for over fifty-nine years. Seven sons and six daughters were born to this union.

Dad taught school for a few years before starting farming and working as a carpenter. Throughout his life he lived in various places in Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta, engaging in lumber milling, farming, bookkeeping, and carpenter work. He served on various boards and committees in the congregation and community. After his retirement in 1984, at Crooked Creek, Alberta, they moved to Hadashville, Manitoba, where he kept busy with writing and translation work until the spring of 1992.

During the war years, Dad spent considerable time in the timber industry around Dryden, Ontario, supervising some of the young men who were working there under the C. O. program.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Helena; his parents; two sisters; two brothers; one son, Lawrence; one daughter-in-law, Jeanette; and five grandchildren.

Those left to mourn his passing are: six sons and six daughters: David and Matilda; Maryann and Irvin Thiessen; and William and Matilda, all of Crooked Creek, A1berta; Stella and Howard Long, Winfield, British Columbia; Alen and Ella, Crooked Creek, Alberta; Alfred and Grace, Hadashville, Manitoba; Tena and Dennis Toews, Crooked Creek, Alberta; Lena and Melvin Thiessen, Grande Prairie, Manitoba; Herbert and Verna; Wayne and Linda; and Lillian and Dennis Thiessen, all of Crooked Creek, Alberta; Elaine and Conrad Rozon, Grande Prairie, Manitoba; and close friends, Jack and Marion Bignold and their family, DeBolt, Alberta; seventy-nine grandchildren and sixty-eight great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters: Isaac, and Henry and Edna, Steinbach, Manitoba; Elizabeth Penner, Greenland, Manitoba; and Minnie and Frank Doerksen, Cartwright, Manitoba; three brothers-in-law and ten sisters-in-law: William and Rita Hiebert, Crooked Creek, Alberta; Isaac and Vida Hiebert, Walla Walla, Washington; Elsie and Nonnan Toews, Greeley, Colorado; Katie and Bob Hiltner, Langdon, North Dakota; Nettie and Eddy Justus, Bonners Feny, Idaho; Marie and Art Beauchamp, Green Acres, Washington; Ted and Marie Quast, and Lena Quast, Langley, British Columbia; Eva Jantz, Bonners Feny, Idaho; Irene Hiebert, Pomeroy, Washington; Hannah Fado, Malta, Montana; Alice Warkentin, Steinbach, Manitoba; Linda (Wohlgemuth) Wiebe, Steinbach, Manitoba; Minna Wohlgemuth, Greenland, Manitoba; and Elizabeth Giesbrecht, Clearbrook, British Columbia; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
