Luther was the son of Everett Sampson and his second wife, Annah Locklear Sampson. He married Lula Mae Sanderson after divorcing his first wife Celia Ann Hunt. His son with Celia Hunt, Capt. Gerald Hilbert Sampson, was killed while serving in the Vietnam War. He is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.

The following was taken from the Oct. 24, 1972 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

Luther H. Sampson, 63, farmer, died Monday. Funeral will be at Deep Branch Baptist Church. Conducted by the Revs. T. M. Sweat and Chesley McNeil. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving: his wife, Mrs. Lula Mae Sampson; a daughter, Miss Mabel Sampson of the home; a son Luther E. Sampson of the home; a stepson, Franklin Sanderson of Mt. Ranier, Md; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Catherine McCall of Pickins, S. C.; two brothers, Warren of Lumberton and Walter Sampson of Florida; five sisters, Mrs. Marie Moore of Maxton, Mrs. Rose Carter and Mrs. Josephine Hunt of Pembroke, Mrs. Sadie Hunt and Mrs. Vernon Freeman of Lumberton; seven grandchildren.
