Ivan Knudson

Alma writes on with her memories of Ivan nameing him the fifth born in the family.  He was born on July 25, 1881 and died March 9, 1923 at the age of 42.  He married Randi Raaen on Jan. 17, 1904.

When Ivan was about five years old he was following Pappa around and when asked by Mom what he was doing he replied,"Spinning ends". This was a phrase he got from Grandmother Johnson who had a large loom on which she wove cloth for the family. She had a spinning wheel and at the end of each spinning session she would pick up the odds and ends of wool and spin these into thread. From this activity, Ivan picked up the saying "Spinning ends",which was used for inconsequential things.

Ivan was part of the family band and he played the trombone along with Alf and Emil. Ivan returned to the farm and joined Sam in renting the home place.

Ivan became ill with Apoplexy and was hospitalized in the Sanitorium at Lake Park. Lars had a dream that if he wanted to see Ivan alive, he better visit him soon. So he walked the eight miles to see Ivan in the spring it was so wet and muddy. Ivan died the next day on March 9, 1923.
