About Oliane Engebretsdatter Knudson
Olianne Johansen Engebretsdtr. was also known as Johansdtr. and Skinnstad in Norway. Her mother remarried when her father commited suicide shortly after her birth. She came to America with her sister Inger Marie Engebrtsdtr. (Engen) who had maried Jakob Fagerlie in 1868 in Dovre/Sel, Oppland Norway.
Olianne was born in Ostre Toten, Oppland near Smurvika on Oct 3, 1856. Her parents were Ingebret and Mary Braaten Johanson Engen.
Olianna arrived in Quebec, Canada and migrated south to McGregor, Iowa. and across the Mississippi River to Rushford, Mn in 1970. In the spring of 1971 her group continued north to Becker County where she stayed in Alexandria and worked as a house maid for the Wagner family who owned a bar in the village.
Jakob Fagerlie traveled by pony and ox cart to Alexandria to get his sister in law Olianna in the spring of 1873 so she could care for his two infant children after the death of his wife, her sister. In the trip from Alexanderia, it was a wet spring and the trails were very muddy. The little pony could not pull the cart with them riding so they had to walk along side with Olianna's Steamer trunk on the cart. Soon the pony tired and they abandoned Oliannas personal possessions near the village of Elizabeth and continued on without any of her
clothing.
Jakob introduced Olianna to Lars Knudson, his neighbor
and they married on August 18, 1873 and she moved to the Knudson homestead keeping little Ole Fagerlie with her and sending Minna Rosina to live with Lars's sister Guri Sorum. (Minna Rosina was my grandmother).
Olianna went on to have 13 children of her own and out lived most of them. She died from complications of a broken hip and Pneumonia. on Sept. 27, 1937.
Lars died one month later. She died at age 81 and Lars was 94.
