About Tamar Jones, Free Settler “Lady Kenway” 1841

Tamar was born in Dorset, England on 18th January, 1838. On 24th December, 1855 she married George Jones at Church of St. Mary's, Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. They had 11 Children with this union, they are as follows:

In 1855 after her marriage, Tamar settled on the Paterson River. About 1860, after her third child, George, was born, the family moved to the Uralla district following Tamar's parents and other members of the family.

George Jones was a convict and he came out ont he "John Barry" in 1839. On his record, "Indent 94, George Jones, 24: read and write; protestant; married; no children; from Kent; trade osler; offence, stealing fawn; tried Kent (Maidstone) Quarter Sessions on 07/07/1838/ sentence life; former convictions, 3mths and 12mths; height 5ft 8ins.;complexion dark, ruddy and freckled; hair black; eyes brown. Particulars remarks; scar on upper part of nose near left eyebrow, scar on right side of neck, mole inside lower right arm, top of little finger of right contracted.

Her husband, George, engaged in mining at the Rocky in its palmy days and then selected land at Maitland Point where they resideduntil his death in 1884. Tamar then sold the land.

From this date Tamar followed the profession of mid-wifery which it is reputed she had learned by accompanying her mother, Eliza, on her visits as a nurse and midwife. During one period, Tamar, who appeared to have been very capable in her field, worked for a Dr. Woods who spoke highly of her.

Both Tamar and George are buried at the Uralla cemetery, New South Wales, Australia.

Arrived in Sydney with parents William and Eliza on board the "Lady Kennaway" (584 tons, built in Calcutta) aged 3 years.

Along with Tamar came siblings Francis Josiah (5yrs) and Harriet (1 1/2 yrs)as bounty passengers.

Tamar's son Francis built his mother a cottage next to his in King Street Uralla. It was still standing in the late '60's. Noreen (Francis's youngest daughter) and Vince Doyle's house is on the same block of land.
