Colombi è concentrato in modo massiccio in Lombardia, ma si individuano ceppi anche in Liguria, Toscana ed Emilia, Colombini è soprattutto lombardo, ma è presente in modo pesante anche nella provincia di Verona, in Liguria, eToscana, Colombo è un cognome panitaliano anche se prevalente al centro nord ed in Sicilia. Questi cognomi possono derivare dal nome tardo latino Columbus, ma anche da soprannomi legati a toponimi quali: Colombano (RO) o San Colombano (MI) o altri simili, si deve tener presente poi che in provincia di Milano, ai trovatelli veniva a volte dato un cognome simile, relativo all'essere loro, senza colpa e puri come colombe.
