Snelling is an ancient and fairly rare English surname, derived from Old English snel, snell , "smart", "active", "bold", which in turn is derived from Old Norse snjallr. Early attestations of the name are a landholder named Snellinc listed in the Domesday Book (1086) and Ulfcytel Snylling, an Earl in the early 11th century.
In Old Norse, Snaelaug was used as a personal name.
