About the Caudill surname

history

The name Caudill first appeared as Caudle when Stephen arrived in VA. It seems that he came from the Gloustershire area of England where there is an abundance of the name. The spelling in the UK was usually Cawdle. Both Stephen and his brother James are listed by the DAR for serving in the Revolutionary War. The name they are given is Cordill. a Stephen Caudle was christened 21 Nov. 1688, Withington, Gloucestershire, Eng. His father is Stephen and the mother Elizabeth. (re: LDS, Batch #032853) There is a Mauricio Francisco Narciso Ferrerons Caudell, christened 3 Mar 1870, at San Martivell, Gerona, Spain. (J891972) There is Guilielmus Caudall, christened October 1565, St.Giles, Newcastle Under Lyme, Stafford E. (Batch #C16727) An intriguing item is from The Virginia Genealogist, 1982, vol 26 #1: Mary Cawdell (Lupo) married Thomas Cawdell, ca 1588, London, Eng. 20 June 1606. Mary is the daughter of Peter Lupo who was living at Sandwich, Kent. Ambrose Lupo, called Ambrose da Milano appears in state papers De. 1540. The Lupo family changed their name from Almaliach as they were Spanish Jews expelled from Spain. The Lupo family members sailed to Virginia ca 1616 to 1621. It was around 1604 that the Spanish Armada crashed on the English coast and it is estimated that 30,000 Spaniards sought refuge on the British Isles. Perhaps Thomas was concealing his identity as he lived at St. Margret, New Fish Street, London. He and Mary may have shared that secret as they were both exiles. We see that the name Caudill is not far from Caudell or Caudillo. Then there is Roger Caldel or Caudel, listed in The Norman People, genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1989. He is a resident of Normandy in 1180. Listed as relatives are Anistina and William Caudel of Cambridgeshire, c.1272. There is reference to a LeCaudel in the the London Huguenot Society of London, 1595. These were the French Protestants who fled France and the Catholic Inquisition. Many of them were forced to leave England for America.
