This was used as a surname for many who did not have one at that stage in the time of the V.O.C and who needed to be listed on record. The "van" meaning from and not to be confused with some Dutch surnames that include van in them like Jan van Riebeeck.

Mostly it was given to Slaves in the Cape colony and many of them where brought in from other Northern (Central) African countries.

There were also some of the local Khoisan people that were recorded as van die Kaap.

Most of the "van die Kaap" mtDNA - Female Progenitors Haplogoup would be "L" and more specifically "L0".

It was not limited to the above, as some of the slaves came from India and Asia. In these surnames it is also found that the Country or region is given from where they came from. ie: Bengal, Malabar, ...

Through DNA testing it could be determined from were these people were from (van). mtDNA from a female descendant on the maternal line could have the answers.

There are a few project that could be link to this one.

I'll neaten it up later. First make groups from where they are from and add the Progenitor and info available like Birth date to determine time line and Birth place and Haplogroup to determine origins and DNA tested descendants if available.
