About Eliza Stoney

Alex B. M. Stoney in 'Some newer annals of the Stoney family' (Epping (NSW): the author, 2008) believes that Eliza married or had an affair with Thomas Johnston Stoney of Harvest Lodge, son of Thomas Stoney of Arran Hill, and that they were parents of Bigoe Armstrong Stoney (born Borrisokane, 1833, died Ballarat, 1878), and that Eliza was transported to Australia for larceny in 1841. However, these were not cousins but half-siblings. The parents of Bigoe Armstrong Stoney are given in his 1861 marriage as Thomas Stoney and Eliza Stoney (cousins), and in his 1875 marriage as Thomas Johnson Stoney and Eliza Stoney. The death certificate for Bigo Armstrong Stoney gives his parents as Thomas and Eliza Stoney. However, it does seem likely that the 28-year-old Eliza Stoney sentenced to 7 years' transportation for larceny on 4 January 1841 in King's County is her. It also seems likely that the Eliza Stoney who arrived in Tasmania on the 'Mexborough' on 26 December 1841 is her.

The Terryglass parish register records the marriage of “Tom[?] Stoney of Borrisokane and Eliza Stoney of Terryglass 13 Feb. 1828”. www.rootsireland.ie transcribes his name as Thomas.
