For those who use the older publications it would be good to list here any irregularities that have been found, supplying sources and references that support the corrections. This is not the place to list minor errors in dates, spelling, place names etc. - these need to be made in the "About" field on the profile. In these cases if necessary a curator can be requested to add a "Curator Note" to the profile drawing attention to the error or discrepancy.

Please add the name of the Progenitor/Stamvader to the following list with a brief description of the basic error, in alphabetical order by last name, slotting them into the list already in place, and then load a document to the project which supports the findings. Please add the profile to the project. List individual descendants of the Prog/SV in the summary to draw attention to them, using the numbering system assigned in the SAG volume, whether it is right or not. Add the Volume and page name.

If there are errors which users need to be made aware of, but which are not yet fully documented, please add the SV/PROG to the list with a note to that effect, alerting others who may be interested. Please also add your name and profile address so that people can contact you. Alternatively start a discussion as in [1] below. If you do not know how to do this please contact one of the Curators who will happily help!

A note on the de Villiers Numbers (DVN)

A DVN refers to the numbers allocated to families in these published genealogies. IT IS the reference to the published trees; IT IS NOT necessarily correct!

These numbers MUST NOT be added to the surname, added as a middle name or used in a display name. They can be recorded in the "About".

The genealogical numbers used in the South African tree were introduced in the 19th Century by C.C. de Villiers. (DVN or DVP) The old Pama/De Villiers genealogies were used by the HSRC and later GISA to compile the SAG volumes covering the years 1652 to 1830. This set of 17 books were completed in 2011. Then GISA started to produce the new set covering the years 1652 to 1930. This is now called SAF (SA Families).

In this system the genealogical number of the South African Stamouer/progenitor is “a” (although on the South African Geni tree we us SV/PROG instead), and his children are numbered chronologically “b1”, “b2”, “b3” etc.; his grandchildren are the ‘c” generation, great grandchildren “d” and so on. (e.g. b1c3d5e2f5g8 etc.)

Recent discussions between some descendants of François Bastiaans prompted a thorough examination of the information available. This has resulted in the interpretation of the information in existing documents shown in the attached document. The table follows the information as presented by Richard Ball - http://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/robberts/I041.html very closely, and his interpretation has greatly influenced this report. We are also indebted to the information presented in the eGGSA Record transcripts, the Inventories of the Orphan Chamber and The First Fifty Years Project.

This concerns: Susanna Maria Elizabeth Eybers There were two Arie Erasmus Blomerus cousins living roughly the same time. According to family written documentation, b2c6d2 (22.8.1848) married Eybers. GISA mentions the wrong AE Blomerus (c. 1838) when referring to the marriage with the above Eybers. This has been taken up with A Heese and GISA informed.

van Breda, Pieter SV/PROG

This concerns the date of death of: Pieter van Breda There is an error in SAF 2011 with the date of death of stamvader Pieter van Breda. It was not 1759 as indicated in SAF, but 12/11/1756 as reflected in his "soldyrekening" (Nationaal Archief, Den Haag, Nederland : VOC 1.04.02 inv. nr. 5724 folio 223). Johann van Breda made the discovery and has uploaded a copy of this document at http://www.eggsa.org/documents/main.php?g2_itemId=1490426 . Helena Catharina b2c1 and Helena Christina NOT b2c1
b2c1 married Gerrit NEL c1800 and was still married to him in c1848, made a will with him in 1821 and fathered children after 1811 with him. She could not have been married to VD BERG in 1811. SAF v6 p75 incorrect with respect to her 2nd marriage, SAF . GISA informed indirectly.

Elizabeth Catharina Roets is shown married to Dirk Coetzee (a1b7c8d4) and Dirk Coetzee (a1b7c8d4) in SAF vol 7 during the same period, The latter is probably the correct version. Geni adapted and GISA notified

He had a child before his first marriage - Hendrik Eksteen who has been numbered b1.

The name of Heinrich Ostwald Eksteen's second wife is mistakenly added in the G.R no 107 and 11, p 60 as mentioned to be his sons wife. The wife being Everdina Cruywagen.

He had 5 children with his 1st wife.

Research done by Scott H. Kotze about "Hans Jurgen Kotze - Die verlore seun." which was published in GENESIS Edition 39 of 31 May 2013, p.13-16, brought to light another son of Johann Kotze, SV. This son was in fact the first born of nine children, and not eight as currently in SAF.

SAF CD v4 page 630 incorrectly have this lady married to the nephew of the above Kenne Nicolaas - Kenne Nicolaas van Breda, b1c8d2e7. The DN's of both -DN Kenne Nicolaas van Breda b1c8d3 and DN Maria Magdalena Louw 1814-1873 support this theory. I the DN of the nephew could be found this would further prove the theory - attribution Marie Vermeulen-Boshoff - see Strober below

According to Prof. Dr. Christian Schmid -"there is no entry in any churchbook available that this person is a daughter of Johann Caspar Martin oo Johanna Gottliebe Gönner. In the later churchbook entry about his second marriage 1807, 3 children together with his 1st wife Johanna Gottliebe Gönner (2 sons and 1 girl in Cape Town). The assets of Johann Caspar Martin mentions only the son Gottlob as he was the only offspring at Cape Town in 1835 when he died".

In Volume 7 page 144 b1c7 was reported in Genesis issue 14 in 2007. The research to correct this has been done, and GISA was informed and will be reported here as soon as I have it! It is very annoying that GISA has not listed this in their errata pages. The information from the Inventory listed below (full document attached) strongly disputes the claim in SAG that Marthinus Gerhardus Oosthuizen was c7 the son of b1 Gerhardus. "Marthinus Oosthuysen Jansz" suggesting that he was probaby the son of Jan Hendrik b5. SAG do have a son of Jan Hendrik c5 bapt. 6 Oct 1743, but with no additional information.

SAG Volume 7 pp 283

The numbering of the table for Meder PALM does not start correctly – the child, Meder Palm, of Meder PALM and Dorothea Catharina v.d.K is not the Stamvader – his father is. Meder jnr. is therrefore b1, and his children the “c” generation, not “b” as listed in the publication. This then changes the numbering of subsequent generations. DVNs have been adjusted and locked on GENi and GISA notified.


Pieterse

Maria Elisabeth Pieterse was the daughter of Bernhardus Jacobus Pieterse and Margaretha Brits. And not the daughter of Bernhardus Jacobus Pieterse and Elizabeth Maria Swart. See attached documents.

  • On page 218 Aletta Maria Potgieter, b1c6d4e6 - ≈ 5 10 1794 is stated as having married Anthonie Michael Muller Graaff-Reinet 2.5.1813 .
  • On page 253 Maria Potgieter, b1c8d1e1 is also stated as having married him - x Graaff-Reinet 2.5.1813 Anthonie Michiel Muller ≈ 24.3.1771, burger Swellendam ✝ Uitenhage 21 1 1843 s.v. Cornelius Johannes Muller and Susanna Elisabeth Ferreira.

Maria Potgieter, b1c8d1e1 is incorrectly listed as Aletta Maria on page 253. The relevant baptism clearly has her as Maria.
Maria b1c8d1e1 has a sister b1c8d1e7 who is Aletta Maria Potgieter, ≈ 31 10 1790 ✝ 1825 x Cape Town 20 4 1808 Thomas Ignatius Ferreira ≈15 4 1787 ✝23 3 1843 (56.4) s.v. Ignatius Petrus Ferreira and Susanna Elisabeth Ferreira. She has in the past been merged with her sister who had been listed as ALETTA Maria in line with the incorrect SAG entry
This marriage entry needs to be seen to verify but it would seem that the link to (Aletta) Maria as b1c8d1e1 is probably incorrect. Under investigation

This concerns: [Elsje Susanna Johanna du Preez, b1c4d2e10f1] marriage with HC du Preez. They were married 1818 in Cradock. In the marriage register, her maiden name is not given, or it is indicated as Du Preez. The entry right above the marriage is Hattingh, and she is given as Elsje Susanna HATTINGH in SAG. According to research by Thys du Preez, with the entry from Cradock's marriage register, she is in fact Elsje Susanna du Preez. GISA has been informed and they have a copy of the marriage entries.

Jansen van Rensburg

SAG Volume 9 Page 295 ERROR gives 14/10/1773 as the date of death (DOD) of b1c3 Johannes Frederik Janse(n) van Rensburg.
He cannot have died 14/10/1773 if he married for a 2nd time 20/2/1794 (SAG sic). (JvR Pages have date of 2nd marriage as 20 Feb 1774). (That was the DOD of his first wife Maria Elizabeth du Buis).

She was married in Paarl 18.11.1780 to Jacobus Groenewald = 28.3.1734 son of Christoffel Groenewald and Anna Hasselaar. This can be seen by the family members that witnessed the baptisms of all their children.

'Janse' van Vuuren

  • The older volumes of the SAG duplicate Daniel van Vuuren and Andries van Vuuren, possible siblings who both married into the Viljoen family. These volumes of SAG have Daniel and Andries as the sons of Johannes van Vuuren (b2) & Catharina Maree as well as Johannes van Vuuren (b2c2) and Johanna Oelofse. The correct placement for these two brothers needs to be confirmed and the duplicate ignored.
  • Hermanus Carel Barend Gerhardus Jansen van Vuuren is incorrectly named as Jansen van Rensburg in SAG Volume 9, page 283 - husband of Maria Cornelia Johanna Jansen van Rensburg.
