Whittle the name is said to be a short form of "white hill" (which seems very English) this family has been adamantly asserting that they are Irish for almost their entire American history (which seems to predate the 1732 VA birth of Burris James Whittle, (and Burris may have had a father also named James born in Ireland, but this is supposition).
