Hungarian Naming Conventions

In Hungarian, the surname comes before the given name: Lengyel Lajos would be Louis Lengyel in English (or Lajos Lengyel in more modern times).

On marriage, Hungarian women traditionally became known by their husband's name. For example Mary Jones who married the aforementioned Mr. Lengyel would officially become Lengyel Lajosné 'Mrs. Louis Lengyel'. (This could be shortened in informal contexts to Lengyelné 'Mrs. Lengyel'. The suffix -né means 'wife'; it derives from nő 'woman'.)

In order to get the best out of Geni Search features, some people would enter this into Geni as

  • Hungarian First Name - Mary
  • Hungarian Last Name - Lengyel [if married - put in Husbands last name, if not married - put in her last name]
  • Hungarian Birth Surname - Jones [Her last name at birth]
  • Hungarian Also Known As - Jones Mary, Lengyel Lajosné
  • English First Name - Mary
  • English Last Name - Lengyel [if married - put in Husbands last name, if not married - put in her last name]
  • English Birth Surname - Jones [Her last name at birth]
  • English Also Known As - Lajosné Lengyel

As with all of Geni, names should be entered as they were used (not translated) and additional names should be entered into the AKA field with a comma between. However, while Michael is an english translation of Mihály, Michael should be only entered if he was actually known as Michael.

RATIONALE/EXPLANATION
- for entering [Hungarian Also Known As - Jones Mary, Lengyel Lajosné] - Hungarians put the surname first
- for entering [English Also Known As - Lajosné Lengyel] English names are traditionally firstname first

Nowadays married names are more flexible -- Mary would have a bewildering number of choices for her name after marriage, of which she would have to pick just one for all official uses: Lengyel Lajosné, Lengyel Lajosné Jones Mary, Lengyelné Jones Mary, Lengyel-Jones Mary, Jones-Lengyel Mary, Lengyel Mary, Jones Mary. Very few of these fit into Geni's name setup.

Note that in Hungarian registers and other official records, women are recorded either with their birth/maiden names only, or with their full married-plus-maiden names. For example, a baptismal register could identify the parents or godparents as Tóth Péter és neje Nagy Julia 'Peter Tóth and his wife Julia Nagy'. The mother of the bride or groom could be identified as simply Nagy Julia 'Julia Nagy', while her death record would probably have Tóth Péterné született Nagy Julia 'Mrs. Peter Tóth born Julia Nagy'. Funeral notices and other such non-official sources, on the other hand, sometimes list women by their married names only: Tóth Péterné 'Mrs. Peter Tóth'. This is at least partly a reflection of the higher social status of married women, although sometimes it was doubtless due to lack of information.

How to Research / Where to Start

Civil registration of vital events (births, marriages, and deaths) began in the Kingdom of Hungary on Oct. 1, 1895.

  • For places that are still in Hungary today, FamilySearch has a lot of these records digitized and available to browse online for free. Indexing is ongoing, slowly.
  • The Hungarian genealogy society (MACSE) is also indexing civil registrations (based on FamilySearch's images), but the specific search results are only made available to subscribers and indexers.
  • For places that are in Austria today (Burgenland), FS generally has the civil registration images online up to 1920. For places that are now in other countries, the civil registrations are currently not generally available online.

Before 1895, vital records were kept by churches. FamilySearch has a lot of these records, on microfilm and/or digitized images, but the availability depends on the specifics.

  • For places that are still in Hungary, FamilySearch has indexes of Roman Catholic and Reformed (református, Calvinist) baptisms. There are some browsable images available for all religions, but many records are still only on microfilm. Check the FamilySearch catalog for more information.
  • For places that are now in Slovakia, FamilySearch is the place to start; in addition to browsable images, there is a relatively complete index for baptisms and some indexing of other events as well.
  • FIXME: this is where information about Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, and Ukraine goes.

Magyar nevek a Geni-n

A hagyományos magyar asszonynevek nehezen fordíthatóak más nyelvekre. Például ha Mary Jones férjhez megy Lengyel Lajoshoz, és Lengyel Lajosné lesz belőle, ezt vannak, akik így írnák be a Geni-be:

Mint a kapcsos zárójelbe tett fordítások is mutatják, a Geni alapbeállítása (és a mögötte rejlő gondolatmenet) alkalmatlan a magyar nevekre. A fenti kalamajkát olyanok ajánlják, akik félnek, hogy máskülönben eredménytelen lesz a Geni keresője és kapcsolat-találója. Szerény fordítótoknak nem ez a tapasztalata: legegyszerűbb a nőket mindig csak a leánykori nevükkel beírni. Így is megtalálja a kapcsolatokat a Geni.

A magyar profilok nevei felvitelekor ajánlott magyarra váltani (Add languege) , ez esetben a nevek sorrendje is magyarrá vált, előszőr jelenik meg a vezetéknév. Férjezett nők esetében elég a csak a vezetéknév (Last Name) vagy akár a leánykori név (Births Surname) mezőbe a megfelelő nevet beírni. A teljes férjezett név megjelenítéshez a megjelenítési név (Display Name) kitöltése ajánlott. Ez a mező használható abban az esetben is, ha valaki a jelenlegi hivatalos nevét használja vagy más néven közismert.

Kutatási útmutató: Hol kezdjem?

Magyarországon a polgári anyakönyvezés 1895. október elsején indult.

  • A mai határokon belüli települések polgári anyakönyvei nagy számban böngészhetőek ingyenesen a FamilySearch-ön. A feldolgozás (indexelés) folyamatban van.
  • A MACSE is indexeli a polgári anyakönyveket (a FamilySearch képanyaga alapján), de a keresési eredményeket csak előfizetők és indexelők tekinthetik meg.
  • A mai határokon túli települések polgári anyakönyvei általában nem érhetőek el az interneten. Kivétel Burgenland, ahol a FamilySearch-ön a Trianon előtti anyakönyvek elég nagy részben böngészhetőek.

1895 előtt egyházi anyakönyvezés volt. Az egyházi anyakönyvek nagy része mikrofilmen és/vagy digitális képekben a FamilySearch-nél megvan, de elérhetőségük részletektől függ.

  • A mai határokon belül a római katolikus és a református keresztelésekről van kereshető adatbázis a FamilySearch-ön. Ezenkívül minden felekezet anyakönyveiből vannak böngészhető képek, de sok anyakönyv még mindig csak mikrofilmen elérhető. A részleteket az FS katalógusában lehet megnézni.
  • A mai szlovákiai helységek egyházi anyakönyveihez a FamilySearch-ön érdemes kezdeni. A böngészhető képeken kívül a keresztelések nagy része és a házasságok és temetések kisebb része is kereshető.
  • JAVÍTS KI: ide való a többi mai határokon túli település kutatásáról szóló tájékoztatás.
  • A zsidó vallású ősök kutatásához érdemes a JewishGen magyar adatbázisával kezdeni.
