Die doel van die projek

Om soveel as moontlik van die persone in die begrafplaas op Geni te kry en ook die wat reeds hier is tot die projek by te voeg.

  1. Begraafplase is 'n noodsaaklike bron in die rekonstruksie van die sosiale geskiedenis van 'n gemeenskap.
  2. Die studie van die Groot trek is eintlik die bestudering van 'n sekere groep mense wat in 'n sekere tyd geleef het en betrokke was by 'n sekere histories gebeurtenis.
  3. Vroeë begraafplase kan as buuitelugmuseums beskou word omdat dit waardevolle voorbeelde van grafsteenmakers se kuns bevat. Elke grafsteen is 'n onvervangbare hhistoriese dokumenet en bron van opvoedkundige waarde wat gebruik kan word om die geskiedenie te verduidelik.

Protestante Begraafplase

Die gereformeerde tradisie is vanaf Nederland na Suid Afrika oorgebring. Aan die Kaap van die 17de en 18de eeu was die gebruik om afgestorwenes binne en rondom die kerk te begrawe soos in Nederland. Die vooraanstaande en ryk burgers is in die kerk begrawe en die minder gegoedes buite die kerk in die kerkhof. In die laat 1800's het daar 'n landsverhuising, naamlik die Groot Trek, vanaf die Kaapkolonie na hoofsaaklik Natal as bestemming plaasgevind. In 1838 word Pietermaritzburg as hoofstad van die Natalse Repebliek uitgelê. Die Voortrekkers het 'n stuk grond aan die buitewyke van die dorp, langs die pad na Durban, uitgekies om 'n begraafplaas aan te lê.

Die Roete

Die roete van die begraafplaas bestaan iiot 30 bakens, Die bestaan hoofsaaklik uit die grafte van Voortrekkers en hulle afstammelinge. Verskeie persone en families wat hul met die kerklike lewe en kultuur van die Afrikaneer in Natal verbind het, word ingesluit. Hieronder is o.a. Duitsers, Engelse, Skotte, Jode, 'n Sweed, Nederlander en Katoliek. Die Anglo Boereoorlog konsentrasiekamp herdenkingstene en ererol is ook ingesluit. 'n Baken kan uit meer as een graf of grafstene bestaan.
