OUTINEN or YLÄOUTINEN or YLÄ-OUTINEN

Säkkijärvi is a former municipality located on the Karelian Isthmus (following WWII, it became known as Kondratyevo, Russia). Yläoutila was most likely a farm therein. It was commonplace for the name of a person’s land to reflect their surname. The prefix “Ylä-“ means “upper” (and later on down the tree, there are some question marks next to “Alaoutinen” where “Ala-“ means “lower.”) This was also a common way to break up farmland.

The central part of the name “Outi” has etymological roots in Karelian Russian, translated from the vernacular form of a saint’s name in Ancient Greek (εὐδοκία), meaning “goodwill, kindness.” It is often mistaken for the Saami word "outa" which means forest.
