To my knowledge, the name "Fox" actually began in either Russia or Poland. It was originally the surname of "Fuchsmann". Pronounced 'Fūx-mon'.
When our ancestors arrived at Ellis Island it was changed and shortened to "Fox".
The Irish family name FOX was originally Catharnaighe (Carney). One family member was nicknamed an tSionnach or Sionnaighe, which is Gaelic for Fox. The name was anglicised to FOX as the result of the harsh Penal Laws of 1698 imposed by the British.
